Kāne‘ohe bay drive trunk sewer reconstruction

Background

This project was initiated following the emergency repair of two drop manholes near the discharge point of the force main from the Kāne‘ohe Bay #3 Wastewater Pump Station (WWPS). Subsequent investigations of these manholes and adjacent trunk sewer segments along Kāne‘ohe Bay Drive uncovered extensive deterioration in multiple locations. Many of the damaged sewer lines were located within narrow easements behind private residencies, making access for routine maintenance challenging and resulting in persistent odor complaints from nearby residents.

Project Description

The Kāne‘ohe Bay Drive Trunk Sewer Reconstruction project, led by the Department of Design and Construction for the City and County of Honolulu, focused on upgrading critical portions of the wastewater infrastructure along the southeastern shoreline of Kāne‘ohe Bay. The improvements were essential to better serve the surrounding residential communities and address long-standing issues with system performance and maintenance access.

The project included the installation of approximately 1,600 linear feet of new 18-inch and 15-inch diameter sewer trunk lines along Kaimalu Place and Kāne‘ohe Bay Drive. The new alignment connected the discharge point of the Kāne‘ohe  Bay #3 Wastewater Pump Station (WWPS) to the Kāne‘ohe Bay #2 WWPS, replacing an aging trunk line previously routed through difficult-to-access backyard easements. This upgrade eliminated structural and hydraulic deficiencies, reduced odor complaints, and significantly improved accessibility for routine maintenance.

In addition, the project rehabilitated deteriorated influent pipelines leading to the Kāne‘ohe Bay #2 WWPS, including 21-inch reinforced concrete and 24-inch cast iron pipes, using cured-in-place (CIPP) lining. Several defective sewer segments and manholes within the tributary collection system were also replaced or rehabilitated using CIPP technology.

Twelve additional pipeline segments - ranging from 6 to 10 inches in diameter and tributary to the Kāne‘ohe Bay #3 WWPS — were also rehabilitated to reduce saltwater infiltration and preserve the integrity of the wastewater system.
